What are the benefits of far-infrared saunas?

The benefits of heat therapy come from gently heating up your body’s core over a longer duration. Studies have shown that the most benefits are seen when saunas provide heat at lower temperatures (50°C.) for around 30 minutes.

Sitting in a standard sauna, you will get very hot, very quickly. You will sweat, but you are unlikely to be able to withstand the piercing heat (around 80-100°C) for long enough for your body’s core temperature to properly heat up.

Far-infrared saunas offer a far gentler heat (around 40-50°C), which is a fantastic way to heat up the body’s core without being overbearing. This will allow you to spend longer in the sauna and properly heat up your core temperature, which will help you to experience all of the fantastic benefits.

If you haven’t experienced the benefits of a far-infrared sauna for yourself, then you may not realise just how beneficial they can be. Here are some of the reasons you should try one…

  1. Circulation – Far-infrared wavelengths can help improve blood flow and oxygen circulation, stimulate endorphins, reduce lactic acid build-up, kill certain bacteria and parasites, and burn calories.
  2. Improve skin – Improves the quality of the skin partly because the skin heats and brings blood flow and oxygen to the epidermal layers, and you are detoxing chemicals. By opening the pores and allowing the sebum to drain normally, far-infrared saunas help to remove the impurities and to stop bacteria from replicating.
  3. Reduce stress and fatigue – Regular use of FIR saunas has been shown to promote a rebalancing of the body’s hormones through its effect on the autonomic nervous system, reducing the negative physical impact of stress on the body.
  4. Body function – Studies indicate that the benefits of far-infrared sauna use are far-reaching and include muscle relaxation; stress, tension, headache and migraine relief; reduction and removal of body toxins; increased cardiovascular strength; increased blood circulation; strengthened immune system; and improved lung function.
  5. Remove toxins – Far-infrared saunas are recognised by health practitioners worldwide as one of the most effective methods of removing chemical and heavy metal toxins from the body. FIR saunas are thought to be 7 times more effective at detoxifying heavy metals such as mercury, aluminium, and other environmental toxins than conventional saunas.
  6. Support the immune system – Sessions in a far-infrared sauna in the early stages of a cold or flu has been known to stop the virus before symptoms occur. Infra-red has been shown to strengthen the immune system by stimulating increased production of white blood cells (including cytotoxic T cells that kill off other cells that are damaged or infected).
  7. Improve the appearance of cellulite – Far-infrared saunas can help clear or reduce cellulite, the gel-like lumps of fat, water and debris trapped in pockets beneath the skin. European beauty specialists routinely incorporate daily far-infrared sauna sessions in programs to reduce cellulite.
  8. Comfortable temperature – The temperature inside a far-infrared sauna is adjustable and comfortable. This allows a person to perspire faster and to tolerate longer inside the sauna. Typical sessions in a far-infrared sauna are 30 minutes, up to 60 minutes, and can be repeated daily to maximise the benefits.
  9. Support injuries and conditions – Far-infrared saunas have been used to treat sprains, bursitis, rheumatism, muscle spasms, neuralgia, and haemorrhoids. They have also been shown to relieve acne, eczema, psoriasis, and heal scar tissue.
  10. Relieve muscle pain – The radiant heat of far-infrared saunas is especially beneficial to people with sports injuries, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and other chronic pain conditions.
  11. Removes more than just water – In a study performed by US researchers, the sweat of people using a conventional sauna was found to be 95-97% water, while the sweat of those using a far-infrared sauna was 80-85% water, with the non-water portion principally cholesterol, fat-soluble toxins, toxic heavy metals, sulphuric acid, sodium, ammonia, and uric acid.
  12. Increase metabolism, burn calories and lose weight – A far-infrared sauna use can be of significant benefit to people trying to lose weight. A 60-minute session in a far-infrared sauna will safely burn up to 800 calories, a perspiration excretion equivalent to a ten-mile run. It can also increase the processing enzyme activity in our digestive tract.
  13. Health problems – Far-infrared saunas are now used in many health facilities for a range of health problems such as menopause, ulcers, insomnia, asthma, bronchitis, ear infections and allergies.
  14. Overall wellbeing – When far-infrared heat penetrates the body, studies show we can experience a refreshed mind, relaxed mood, reduced aches and pains, improved metabolism, and systemic regularity leading to an overall feeling of wellness.
  15. Cardiovascular fitness – NASA has utilised far-infrared therapy to help maintain the fitness levels of astronauts in weightless environments.

FIR saunas offer you all of the above benefits, and by choosing a Gentle Heatwave sauna you can feel safe in the knowledge that you are using a supplier who has spent years researching the very best components, to build the highest quality FIR sauna available.

Far-infrared saunas vs conventional saunas?

There are lots of reasons to choose a far-infrared sauna over other types of sauna, here are a few…

  • No custom ventilation required  Far-infrared saunas can be placed in any room as there are no requirements for additional (and sometimes expensive) custom-built ventilation to be installed. This reduces installation costs and makes it possible to install an FIR sauna in spaces that would not normally be suitable for a traditional sauna.
  • Safe for home use As FIR saunas are not super-heated, they are a safe heating method for home use, and they are cheaper to run than conventional saunas.
  • Removal of toxins – FIR saunas generate 2-3 times more deep sweat than conventional saunas. Because of this deep sweat, 20% of the sweat produced from an FIR sauna is toxins, versus 3% in a regular sauna.
  • Cardiovascular workout – FIR saunas offer a gentle increase in heart rate and cardiovascular conditioning, making it a more comfortable and safe heat to burn calories than conventional saunas.
  • More comfortable temperatures – FIR saunas offer considerably lower temperatures than conventional saunas, making them a more comfortable space to spend time in.
  • Easy to fit – FIR saunas plug straight into a regular 240v wall outlet, so don’t require any plumbing or wiring, unlike conventional saunas.
